GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023 – Course-Wise Eligibility, Documents Required

IIT Kanpur (IIT-K) has announced the detailed GATE eligibility criteria 2023 for the candidates. Before registering for the GATE exam, aspirants must go through these eligibility norms – as defined by the GATE authorities – to ensure that they can apply for the exam without any issue. In case a candidate fails to comply with the GATE eligibility criteria, the authorities might forfeit the admission of the ineligible candidates at any given point of time.

GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023 – Who is Eligible to Apply for GATE 2023?

As discussed above, before filling the application form, the candidates must make sure that they satisfy the eligibility criteria for the GATE exam 2023. If any candidate fails to do so, the concerned authorities hold all the rights to cancel their candidature at any stage. 

Candidates must also note that the qualifying score for the GATE exam has been changed to 650 (earlier it was 750), as per the revised Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) scheme. Along with that, NITs will now be eligible to grant the fellowship to the students.

As per the GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023:

  1. Candidates belonging to India (natives) or aspirants from Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, and United Arab Emirate (UAE) are considered eligible for GATE.
  2. There is no minimum or maximum age limit to apply for the exam.
  3. Applicants having bachelors’ degrees, integrated degrees, or diplomas in their concerned specifications from any recognized institute or university are eligible to apply for the exam.
  4. No passing percentage has been specified by the authorities, and hence, candidates who have passed their degrees (irrespective of how much they scored) will be able to apply for GATE 2023.

GATE Eligibility – What is the GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023 for Indian Students?

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with B.E, B.Tech, and B.Pharma degrees:

  • Candidates must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technology or a 3-year degree after a  Diploma course.
  • Students in 3rd year or higher are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2024 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with B.Sc (Research) and B.S degrees:

  • Aspirants must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree in Science after 10+2 or a Diploma in Science.
  • Students in 3rd year or higher are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2024 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with B.Arch degree:

  • Applicants must possess a 5-year bachelor’s degree in Architecture from a recognized institution.
  • Students in 3rd year or higher are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2024 (4-year program) and 2025 (5-year program) – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with B.Sc/B.A./B.Com degrees:

  • Aspirants must have a 3-year bachelor’s degree in Science/Arts/Commerce after 10+2.
  • Students in 3rd year are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees in 2023 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with B.Sc Agriculture/Horticulture/Forestry degrees:

  • Aspirants must have a 4-year bachelor’s degree after 10+2.
  • Students in 3rd/4th year are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2024 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with M.Sc, M.A, MCA (or equivalent) degrees:

  • Applying candidates must possess a master’s degree in any branch of Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Applications, or any equivalent subject.
  • Students in 1st year or higher are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2024 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with 5-year Integrated M.E and M.Tech or Dual degrees:

  • Must possess 5-year Integrated Master’s Degree or Dual Degree in Engineering or Technology.
  • Students who are currently pursuing 3rd/4th/5th year of graduation are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2025 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with Integrated M.E and M.Tech (Post B.Sc.) degrees: 

  • Students must have a 4-year Post-B.Sc Integrated Master’s Degree in Engineering or Technology.
  • Students who are currently pursuing 1st/2nd/3rd/4th year of the degree are also eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for applicants with Integrated M. Sc and Integrated B.S + M.S degrees:

  • Candidates must possess Integrated M.Sc. or 5-year Integrated B.S + M.S Degree
  • Students in 3rd year or higher are also eligible to apply.
  • Candidates who have completed their degrees in 2022 or will be completing their degrees till 2025 – are eligible to apply.

GATE 2023 eligibility for candidates with Professional Society Examinations (equivalent to B.E, B.Tech, and B.Arch) degree:

  • Students registered under Professional Societies* after May 31, 2013 in courses equivalent to B.E, B.Tech, and B.Arch and satisfying other eligibility parameters will also be eligible to apply.
  • The eligibility of such candidates are subjected to court order as the case is under judicial consideration and therefore, prohibited from public discussion elsewhere.

  2. The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers, including Polymer and Environmental Group (IIChemE)

GATE Eligibility – What is the GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023 for International Candidates?

Candidates belonging to Bangladesh, Nepal, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates are also eligible to apply for the GATE exam.

Aspirants belonging to these countries must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Candidates must have qualified for any relevant engineering course.
  2. The aspirants appearing in their final year of bachelor’s degree will also be considered eligible to apply.
  3. Candidates graduating in 2023 (or earlier) will be required to submit their course completion certificates, degree certificates, membership certificates, professional certificates, and provisional certificates issued by their respective institutions.
  4. Candidates who will be qualifying for their respective degrees in 2023 (or later) will be required to submit a certificate from their Principal or a copy of the marksheet/result sheet for section A of the Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers (AMIE).

GATE Eligibility – What is the GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023 for Candidates With Backlogs?

Candidates having backlogs in any paper from their qualifying exam or whose results are awaited for the last semester have to fulfill the following criteria: 

  1. These candidates will be required to upload a photo copy of their final year mark sheet in the academic certificate download section of the GATE application form. It must be noted that a mark sheet downloaded from the internet will NOT be accepted by the authorities.
  2. Candidates can also get a declaration from their college Principal along with the signature and seal. This should be uploaded during the online submission of the GATE registration form.

GATE Eligibility – What is the GATE Eligibility Criteria 2023 for M.Tech Courses?

  • Candidates must have passed graduation in engineering/technology or have a master’s degree in any relevant science subject.
  • Candidates in the pre-final or final year of their qualifying degree are also eligible to appear for the GATE 2023 exam.
  • Candidates pursuing their qualifying degrees from countries other than India must be currently in the 3rd or higher years or should have completed their bachelor’s degree (of at least 3 years) in Engineering / Technology / Arts / Science / Commerce.
  • Aspirants seeking M.Tech admission in any of the IITs need to register themselves through the COAP portal (Common Offer Acceptable Portal).
  • Candidates seeking admission in NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs must use the CCMT portal (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech).

GATE Eligibility – What Documents are Required to be Uploaded by Candidates?

  1. Photograph and signature of the candidate.
  2. Valid photo ID such as Aadhaar Card/Passport/Driving License/PAN Card/Voter ID/College ID/Employee Identification Card/Notarized Affidavit with Photo, Signature, Date of Birth and Residential Address.
  3. Foreign applicants required a Passport/Govt. issued ID/College ID/Employee ID.
  4. Degree/Provisional Certificate/Course Completion Certificate.
  5. Copy of mark Sheet of the 5th/6th/7th semester.
  6. Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category candidates must upload a PwD certificate issued by a recognized authority in a column specified in GATE application form.
  7. It must be noted that the candidates having at least 40% impairment (irrespective of the kind of disability) are only provided with concession in the application fee. Such candidates are required to submit the certificate at the allotted institute at the time of admission.
  8. Candidates belonging to SC/ST category are required to upload a valid document proof to get a concession in the application fee. It must be noted that only the certificates issued by authorized officials will be considered for concession.
  9. Similarly, dyslexic candidates are required to submit a certificate stating their condition issued by authorities in order to get the services of a scribe during the GATE 2023 exam.

Aspirants can only apply for two GATE papers. However, the second paper must be from a pre-defined two-paper combination list only.
