Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings Include 91 Indian Varsities, IISc Ranked the Best in India

New Delhi, September 28, 2023 – World University Rankings 2024 – As many as 91 Indian universities have featured in the World University Rankings 2024, announced by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine on September 27, 2023. Last year, 75 Indian institutes were included in the rankings.

India’s highest-ranked institution, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bangalore, has made a return to the global top 250, securing a position within the 201-250 band for the first time since 2017.

India has improved its ranking. It has become the fourth-best represented nation in the World University Rankings 2024, up from sixth position last year.

Two Indian institutions, namely IIT Guwahati and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, have elevated their positions by two bands to secure a spot among the world’s top 800 universities, moving from the 1001-1200 range to the 601-800 bracket.

The global rankings continue to be dominated by prestigious institutions securing the top positions. Top five rankings secured by these universities are follows:

  • University of Oxford
  • Stanford University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 
  • Harvard University
  • University of Cambridge

In the top 10 of THE Rankings 2024, seven universities are from the US, while the other three are from the UK.

In this 20th edition of the ranking, 1,904 universities, an increase from 1,799 last year, spanning 108 countries and regions, have been evaluated. 

The latest ranking report highlights significant advancements by Indian universities this year, with five of the country’s top institutions making notable progress. 

Noteworthy achievements include:

  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc): IISc has demonstrated remarkable improvement, moving from the 251-300 ranking band last year to a more prestigious 201-250 position.
  • Anna University: Anna University has climbed from the 801-1000 ranking band in the previous year to a significantly higher standing within the 501-600 range.
  • Aligarh Muslim University: Aligarh Muslim University has ascended from the 801-1000 ranking band last year to the more competitive 601-800 category.
  • Bharathiar University: Bharathiar University has mirrored this progress, elevating itself from the 801-1000 ranking band to the 601-800 range.

Aside from the standout performance of IISc, India boasts four additional universities within the top  501-600 range. These institutions include:
