UGC NET Cut Off – How to Check, Expected, Previous Years’ Cutoffs

UGC NET cut off is the minimum marks or rank that an aspirant must secure to qualify the exam and get recruited either as Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellow (JRF). National Testing Agency (NTA) will release the UGC NET cutoffs for both ‘Assistant Professor Only’ and ‘Both Assistant Professor & Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)’ positions separately.

The cut-off list will be available on the official NTA UGC NET website in PDF format. Upon its release, candidates can download the cut off list and check the opening and closing ranks within which recruitment/selection is being offered by various participating institutes.

Factors Determining UGC NET Cut off

UGC NET Cut Off – Rules and Regulations

There are several criteria or rules which the UGC follows while determining the cutoff marks. Candidates can keep the following points in mind to determine the expected UGC NET cutoff marks.

  1. Only 6% of the qualifying candidates will be selected for the post of Assistant Professor and JRF
  2. Total number of slots allocated to different category candidates (other than General) will be based on the reservation policy of the Indian Government
  3. Candidates should acquire the minimum marks set as the cut off for UGC NET to be eligible for Assistant Professor 
Example: Number of candidates to be declared qualified for Eligibility for Assistant Professor in the subject ‘Anthropology’ for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category Number of candidates belonging to SC category securing at least 35% aggregate marks in Paper 1 & 2 for SC category for ‘Anthropology’ (x) Total slots derived for SC category as per Step 2 (÷) Total number of candidates belonging to SC category overall subjects who secure at least 35% aggregate marks in both the papers taken together
  1. The aggregate percentage of Paper 1 & 2 corresponding to the number of slots shall determine the qualifying cut-off for Eligibility for Assistant Professor
  2. All the candidates (who have applied for both Assistant Professor and JRF positions) out of the total qualified candidates derived in Point 3, shall be considered for JRF
  3. The total number of JRF positions are allocated among different categories as per the reservation policy of the Government of India. The procedure for subject-wise cum category-wise allocation of JRF slots is mentioned below:
Example: Number of candidates to be declared qualified for JRF as well as  eligible for Assistant Professor position in the subject ‘Anthropology’ for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category Number of candidates belonging to ST category who have opted for JRF and have qualified for Assistant Professor in the subject ‘Anthropology’ (x) Total JRF slots available for ST category (÷) Total number of candidates belonging to ST category overall subjects who have opted for JRF and have qualified for Assistant Professor

UGC NET – Section wise Qualifying Marks 

UGC NET qualifying marks are the minimum (requirement) marks that the candidates need to secure in the entrance examination to be considered qualified to participate in the further selection process. 

Candidates need to score the minimum marks as highlighted below to be considered eligible for the Assistant Professor or JRF.

UGC NET  – Category wise Qualifying marks

Candidates have to qualify in both the papers of NTA UGC NET to get shortlisted for Junior Research Fellowship or Assistant Professorship. The overall UGC NET qualifying percentage for General category candidates is 40% (Paper 1 and 2), whereas, for reserved category candidates, 35% is the qualifying percentage. 

UGC NET Cut Off – Merit List

  1. After the UGC NET cut off marks are released by NTA, the merit list is prepared. 
  2. This merit list contains the names of shortlisted candidates who have cleared the minimum cut off marks. 
  3. When this list is created, it is prepared separately for the positions of JRFs and Assistant Professors.
  4. Only the top 6% of candidates from the merit list will be eligible for the position of JRF or Assistant Professor.

How to Check UGC NET Cut Off?

Once the UGC NET 2021 exam is conducted successfully, the National Testing Agency will publish the cut off marks via online mode. Candidates need to follow these basic steps to check their scores/marks: 

1. Visit the official UGC NET website 

2. After the Homepage opens, click the link available for UGC NET cutoff (May 2021)

3. Enter the following details in the login page:

  • Application number
  • Password/date of birth

4. Security pin as shown in the image

5. Click on the Submit button.

6. Download the UGC NET cutoff PDF and save it for future reference.

UGC NET Counselling 2021

University Grants Commission will release the UGC NET 2021 counselling schedule via online mode. The authority, in due time, will notify about the commencement of the UGC NET counselling process. The counselling process will be conducted face to face and candidates have to attend the counselling procedure in person to get admission. 

If the candidates are selected in the counselling process, the exam authority will send them the call letters to be present in the counselling round. They have to follow the steps mentioned below to appear for and complete the UGC NET counselling process:

  • If shortlisted in the merit list, they will be called out for counselling process
  • They have to arrive at the counselling centre for verification along with the required documents 
  • Candidates will be granted admission in various programs based on their eligibility criteria
