Bachelor’s Not Required for IIM-A Admission 2023-25, Read Revised Criteria

New Delhi, 20 January 2022 – The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has scrapped bachelor’s degree as a criterion for admission into the postgraduate programme (PGP) offered by the institute (in other words, IIM Ahmedabad’s MBA course) for the 2022-24 batch. Now candidates do not need a bachelor’s degree to make it into the 2022-24 batch of the PGP (MBA course) offered by the institute. This is done keeping in mind the fact that many colleges could not conduct bachelor’s exams properly due to the pandemic in the last 2 years.

Now, the Academic Rating (AR) score, which is required for admission into IIM-A, will be calculated on a scale of 25 on the basis of a candidate’s Class 10 marks, Class 12 marks, and work experience. As per the institute, “The AR now will be computed on a scale of 25 (considering class 10 and class 12 marks as well as candidate’s work experience) and the points will be pro-rated to 35.”

What was the Earlier Criteria for PGP (MBA) Admission in IIM Ahmedabad?

As per the earlier criteria:

  • A candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA.
  • In case of the candidate belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) categories, the minimum required CGPA was 45%.
  • The degree must be offered by any university incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a university under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognised by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
  • The bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification obtained by the candidate must entail a minimum of three years of education after completing Class 12.

What is the Revised Criteria for PGP (MBA) Admission in IIM Ahmedabad?

Now, aspirants do not need to have a bachelor’s degree to get an admission into IIM-A. Their academic rating will now be calculated on the basis of marks obtained in Class 10 and 12 along with their work experience.

The following formula will now be used for computing a candidate’s Composite Score (CS):

CS = 0.35 x (Pro-rated AR Score/35) + 0.65 x (Normalised overall CAT Score)

Here, the Pro-rated AR Score = [(AR score computed by taking 0 points for Bachelor’s degree)/25] x 35

Why has IIM Ahmedabad Decided to Scrap the Bachelor’s Degree Admission Criteria?

The institute has taken this decision because due to the pandemic many universities were unable to conduct bachelor’s exams in the last two years (2020 and 2021). The results for students were prepared on the basis of varied alternative criteria.

Due to this, the CAT committee in 2021 decided to allow candidates to take the CAT-2021 exam without requiring any minimum percentage of marks in bachelor’s degree. IIM-A took note of this fact and decided to scrap-off bachelor’s degree as the criteria for getting admission into the post graduate (MBA) programme.
