October 18, 2022, New Delhi, Cut-Off for PG Medical Courses: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has agreed on lowering the cut-off marks for post graduate or PG medical courses admission in India. This is because a huge number of seats have not been filled in the PG counselling of the last academic session.
Official sources from MCI have confirmed that the council has decided to reduce cut-off marks by 25% for General category, 20% for General – Person with Disability (PWD) category, and 15% for both Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Caste (OBC) and SC/ST/OBC – PWD categories.
The decision to lower the percentile was made on the recommendations of the National Medical Commission, or NMC, in a meeting held on October 14, 2022. The commission made the decision as it was observed that almost 1400 seats were left unoccupied in para- and pre-clinical medical courses in the previous session.
Thus, to avoid a lower admission rate, the cut-off for all PG medical courses has been lowered.

Cut-Off for PG Medical Courses – Reasons
- Earlier, the benchmark percentile for Postgraduate medical courses averaged over 300 (for 2019 and 2020, it was over 340 for the general category). Due to this, a large number of seats were left vacant in the academic year 2020-21.
- A lower cut-off has thus been introduced to fill up the vacant seats, so that the admission rate for PG courses, which was quite low in the previous academic year, can be boosted and more seats could be filled.
- In case of a lower admission rate, the resources will be left unused which will also affect the future of the country, as mentioned by one of the officials of the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Cut-Off for PG Medical Courses – Changes
- The cut-off marks or qualifying percentile has been reduced by 25 percentile for General candidates of Postgraduate medical courses.
- The cut-off marks or qualifying percentile has been reduced by 20 percentile for General – PWD candidates.
- The cut-off marks or qualifying percentile has been reduced by 15 percentile for both SC/ST/OBC and SC/ST/OBC – PWD candidates.
Cut-Off for PG Medical Courses – Benefits
- Lowering the cut-off marks will allow a large number of students to be eligible to apply for Postgraduate courses in medicine.
- As more applicants will be eligible to apply for these courses, there will be fewer vacant seats and resources will not be wasted.
- The number of PG medical candidates will thus increase in 2022-23.
