IITs to Offer 4-Year Integrated B.Ed Courses and Other Announcements

New Delhi, 13 June 2022 – The Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, has announced that the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) will soon be offering four-year integrated Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) courses. The minister noted that the levels of many B.Ed. colleges in India are not up to the mark and this teacher education initiative (B.Ed. programmes) will help in increasing the efficiency of teachers in the country. 

He tweeted, “This year, a 4-year integrated teacher education program or ITP pilot model will be launched to provide appropriate training to teachers under the National Education Policy. This will increase the efficiency of the teachers and the full development of the students.”

Note: The Union Education Minister inaugurated a new Kendriya Vidyalaya at the IIT Bhubaneswar campus on Saturday. Herein, he also announced the four-year integrated teacher education programme (B.Ed.) that would be introduced in IITs to train the teachers in line with the New Education Policy (NEP).

IITs to Offer 4-Year Integrated B.Ed. – Details

  • The initiative was planned after the government announced a 4-year integrated B.Ed. programme last year in October 2021. 
  • As per the original announcement made last year: 
    • The integrated B.Ed. programme will commence from the academic session 2022-23.
    • The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has created the curriculum for this course under the leadership of the Ministry of Education.
    • The course will enable a candidate to get a degree in education along with a specialised discipline like history, arts, economics, mathematics, science, or commerce. 
    • These four-year integrated B.Ed. courses will also offer specialisations for the education of ‘gifted children’.
    • Admission for B.Ed. courses will be carried out by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  • Now, in June 2022, it has been stated by the government that IITs will be offering an integrated B.Ed. programme, which will teach and provide appropriate training to aspiring teachers. 
  • The government expects that the level of teachers will increase due to these premium courses and students will get the best education possible. 
  • Several IITs, including IIT Bhubaneswar, have already submitted applications to start B.Ed. courses in their premises. 
  • Once these institutions receive approval from the Union Education Ministry, the courses will be started. 
  • IIT Bhubaneswar might also start the IIT entrance process for 4-year integrated B.Ed. courses from 2022 onwards.

  • A new Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) campus has been inaugurated by the union education minister that will educate students from Classes 1 to 12. 
  • Worth Rs 25 crores, the school will focus on providing high-quality education to students and will have both IIT teaching and non-teaching faculties. 
  • It will be completed in a span of 2 years. 

PM Shri Schools Announced

  • The minister also announced the opening of new central schools in Odisha. 
  • The schools will operate under the direct leadership of the Prime Minister. 
  • PM Shri Schools will be set up in every block of the country, in which, over 500 will be set up in Odisha.
