Delhi Teachers’ University Gets Approval from the Delhi State Cabinet

New Delhi, 22 December 2021 – The Delhi State Cabinet has given its approval for the setting up of Delhi Teachers’ University at Bakkarwala (West Delhi). Admissions in the new university are scheduled to begin in the 2022-23 academic session. The university is being set up as a centre for excellence in teacher preparation, where educators will be trained in both pre-service and in-service areas of education studies, leadership, and policy.

The Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal, announced at a press conference that “Today [20 December 2021], the Delhi Cabinet approved the establishment of the Delhi Teachers’ University. The varsity will prepare highly qualified and well-trained teachers in Delhi itself. [The] ‘Delhi Teachers University’ Bill 2021 will be placed before the Delhi Vidhan Sabha in the coming session.”

What is the Aim of Setting Up the Delhi Teachers’ University?

As per the Chief Minister, “The Delhi Teachers University will be a public university dedicated to preparing excellent quality teachers for the city across different school stages.”

The university is established with the purpose to train teachers in both pre-service and in-service areas of education. This means that these teachers will have knowledge about the different facets of teaching, including leadership, management, policy making, curriculum design, classroom activities, among others. 

The fundamental aim is to prepare teachers who excel at imparting knowledge to students in both theoretical and practical formats. During their training, the students of the university will be attached with Delhi Government schools. This will help them gain hands-on teaching experience, which will prepare them for a fruitful career in education.

What Courses Will be Taught at the Delhi Teachers’ University?

The Delhi Teachers’ University will offer four-year Integrated Teacher Education Programmes like BA-BEd, BSc-BEd, among other courses. These courses will be offered in order to develop a new generation of teachers.

  • BA-BEd: The Bachelor of Arts Education (BA-BEd) is an undergraduate dual-degree program spanning a total of 4 years. It provides an integrated course of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education. Through the course, students gain in-depth knowledge in different Arts & Professional Studies subjects like Hindi, English, Political Science, Geography, History, Economics, Psychology, Sociology, and more. The main aim of the course is to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge in terms of teaching methodologies and other pedagogies. The minimum eligibility to pursue the BA-BEd programme is to pass Class 12 from a recognized board.
  • BSc-BEd: The Bachelor of Science Education (BA-BSc) is an undergraduate dual-degree of 4 years. It provides an integrated Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education course. The aim of the course is to provide extensive knowledge in various Science subjects including Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. Through the course, students are provided with knowledge in the field of science, which empowers them with problem-solving skills. The minimum eligibility to pursue a dual degree in the BSc-BEd programme is to pass Class 12 from a recognised board.
