September 12, 2022, New Delhi, AIIMS Fee Structure: The fee structure for medical education at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) across the country is likely to be changed and modelled after the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to increase the revenue-generating potential of the medical institute.ย 

The discussion took place keeping in view the recommendation made during AIIMS’ “Chintan Shivir” (brainstorming session) held in August 2022.

According to an official source, the Union Health Ministry is preparing a committee that will examine the feasibility of these proposals and determine the size of the hike that can be undertaken.

Additionally, it has been suggested that AIIMS facilities work with institutions like IITs and IIMs to do joint research and education projects.

  • The โ€˜Chintan Shivirโ€™ recommended that the fee structure for medical education at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) across the country should be remodelled after the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) to increase the revenue-generating ability of AIIMS.
  • One other recommendation made at the “Chintan Shivir” includes increasing the number of private wards and converting one-third of the general ward beds at all AIIMS into special wards. Additionally, a committee should be formed to review the fees charged by AIIMS for both paying and non-paying patients in order to increase revenue.
  • According to the recommendations, a cross-subsidization model that gives the economically weaker groups free services, while charging the non-paying patients as per their financial status might also be implemented.
