Tamil Nadu Govt. Job Exams – Tamil Language Requirement Made Compulsory 

New Delhi, 6 December 2021 – The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has announced that all competitive exams conducted under its umbrella will now have a compulsory paper in the Tamil language. All candidates appearing for recruitment in Tamil Nadu government services and state-run public sector enterprises now need to qualify a paper on Tamil language to get selected.

As per TNPSC, the paper will be equivalent to Class 10 Tamil language exam and candidates need to score a minimum of 40% marks to qualify. If aspirants do not pass the qualifying Tamil language paper, then they won’t be considered for recruitment in Tamil Nadu government services. 

The Human Resource Management Secretary – Mythili K Rajendran – noted in this regard, “The Tamil qualifying exam is mandatory for all recruitment exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). Candidates must get a minimum of 40% marks to qualify in the Class X-level exam. TNPSC will not evaluate the answer sheets of other subjects if the candidates do not qualify in the Tamil exam.”

Tamil Paper Mandatory for Public Service Exams – Main Points

  • For Group I, II, and IIA posts in TNPSC, the qualifying exam will be conducted along with the main written exam. 
  • For group III and IV posts in state services that have single-stage examination, general Tamil will be made mandatory and the English option will be removed.
  • For exams conducted by the Teachers Recruitment Board, Medical Services Recruitment Board, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, and Tamil Nadu Forest Uniformed Services Recruitment Committee, separate orders will be issued regarding the Tamil language paper.
  • For other single-stage exams, candidates need to clear the Tamil exam to get their answer sheets evaluated.

Note: As per the mandate, candidates who do not know Tamil are now eligible to appear for all exams conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC). These candidates have to qualify the Tamil language exam within two years of entering service.
