New Delhi, 25 February 2021: Delhi University (DU) is likely to begin admissions to undergraduate courses based on the combination of the candidate’s Class 12 marks and the result of the Central University Common Entrance Test (CUCET) from this year. The University has already sent this proposal to the University Grants Commission and has shown readiness to adopt it immediately. However, the weightage of the two scores (Class 12 boards and CUCET) in determining the eligibility of candidates is yet to be decided.
Statement from MoE Regarding DU Admissions 2021
The Union Ministry of Education had constituted a seven-member committee last December to recommend modalities for the CUCET or admission to undergraduate courses. As per them, the modalities for a ‘high-quality aptitude test’ would come into effect from the academic session 2021-22 and be implemented for admissions into Delhi University, Banaras Hindu University, and other central universities, as per the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
Higher Education Secretary, Amit Khare also stated in the same month that a common entrance test for admission to all Central Universities will be implemented in 2021.
While many were concerned about the impact of CUCET on DU’s admission process, which was mostly based on merit, sources from the Education Ministry have produced a descriptive explanation regarding it. As per the Ministry, the aspirants would have to appear for an aptitude test which will comprise logical reasoning, quantitative ability, and verbal ability. This test would be followed by other subject-specific tests.
Assurance from DU
C. Joshi, the acting Vice-Chancellor of DU and one of the members of the MoE committee, also assured the students that marks of the Class 12 Board exam would be counted and merit will not be compromised.
He added, “CUCET will be finalized soon and DU shall adopt it from the upcoming academic session itself. Nonetheless, the admission process of DU will be different this year. While CUCET’s final form is still awaited, we have already set up our own admission committee in place. Later, we will sync our admissions based on what CUCET suggests.”
Apart from this, the other two central universities in Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are yet to take a call regarding any change in their admission process.
