New Delhi, 2 June 2021 – The Central Government announced the cancellation of CBSE Class 12 board exams 2021 last evening. This decision was announced a few hours after Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level review meeting, during which he was briefed on all possible options related to holding the Class 12 exams this year. These options were put forward after extensive discussions with all the states and other stakeholders.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will now execute steps to compile the results of Class 12 students “as per a well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.”
It has also been decided that, just like the last year, if some students still want to appear for the exams, they shall be provided with such an option, as and when the situation becomes conducive.
Calling it a “student friendly decision” that has “been reached after consulting all stakeholders from across the length and breadth of India”, the PM thanked the states across the country for providing feedback on the issue of Class 12 board exams.
Note: Shortly after the cancellation of CBSE Class 12 board examination was declared, the CISCE Board also announced the cancellation of ISC Class 12 exam 2021.

Why were CBSE Class 12 Exams 2021 cancelled?
- Anxiety of students must be put to an end – As per the published notice by Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) – “The Prime Minister said that the decision on Class 12 CBSE Exams has been taken in the interest of students. He stated that COVID-19 has affected the academic calendar and the issue of Board Exams has been causing immense anxiety among students, parents and teachers, which must be put to an end.”
- Students must not be forced to appear for exams during COVID – “PM said that the Covid situation is a dynamic situation across the country. While the numbers are coming down in the country and some states are managing the situation through effective micro-containment, some states have still opted for a lockdown. Students, parents and teachers are naturally worried about the health of the students in such a situation. PM said that students should not be forced to appear for exams in such a stressful situation,” mentioned the notice further.
CBSE Class 12 Exams Cancelled – Most Important Points
CBSE Class 12 evaluation criteria – The evaluation of CBSE Class 12 board results would now be done as per an objective criterion. As per the announcement, the results would be declared within a set time frame.
Option to take the exam available – Students will be provided with an option to appear for the Class 12 exams, if they wish to do so. The exam dates will be announced as per the COVID-19 situation in the country, so that the students can appear for the exams when the situation is favorable.
