New Delhi, 17 June 2021 – After prolonged discussion, the Supreme Court has accepted the Class 12 result evaluation plan filed by CBSE. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) have submitted their respective Class 12 evaluation criteria 2021 in the Supreme Court (SC) this morning.
According to the latest reports, SC has approved the CBSE assessment criteria for Class 12 students, which will encompass the weightage of Class 10 and 11 final examinations, and 12 pre-board results. The exam authorities have stated that with the newly acquired permission from SC, they will assess the students’ past performances on the basis of these 3 results to form the final Class 12 marks. 
Furthermore, the board has also told the Supreme Court that the CBSE Class 12 final results will be out by 31st July 2021.
A Break Down of the Class 12 Marks Tabulation Plan (as presented in front of SC)
1. A 30:30:40 Ratio – The 13-member expert committee constituted by the CBSE Board has suggested to the Supreme Court Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwar that:
- 30% weightage of marks will be based on Class 10 final exam performance,
- 30% marks will be allocated for Class 11 final exam, and
- Nearly 40% weightage will be given to Class 12 pre-board result.

2. Best of 3 Papers in Classes 10 and 11 – Attorney General for India, KK Venugopal, who is appearing in front of the court on behalf of CBSE, stated that the Class 10 and 11 final examination marks will be considered on the basis of the best of three subjects (out of five papers).
3. Class 12 Unit, Term, and Practicals – For Class 12 marks obtained in unit tests, term exams, and practical tests will be taken into account.
CBSE Class 12 Result 2021 – Latest Updates from Supreme Court
Even though the apex court approved the idea proposed by CBSE, the Court has asked both the CBSE and CISCE to incorporate two aspects:
- Create a redressal/dispute resolution mechanism in case students complain of extremely low marks and ask for correction in the declared final results
- Propose a specified timeline to declare the results before optional exams to be conducted
The Supreme Court has also put forward the idea of holding the written examination in person for those candidates who wish to take it if the upcoming time and situation permits it. Although this option is still open for discussion, when the court asked CBSE about providing any tentative timeline for the same, Attorney General KK Venugopal retorted that in this current pandemic situation, providing a date for conducting a written examination for Class 12 is really difficult.
Additionally, Venugopal told the court, “If a student is unable to meet the qualifying criteria, which is now spread across three years of study, they will be placed in the ‘essential repeat’ or ‘compartment’ category. Students who are not satisfied can appear again when the CBSE conducts the Class 12 board examination.”
Meanwhile, the Supreme has announced that this case will be heard again on Monday, 21st June 2021. The Court has ordered both CBSE and CISE to present a resolution on the two aspects highlighted above. Added to it, two weeks have been allocated to CBSE and CISCE to come up with objective criteria to mark Class 12 students, who need these results to appear for competitive exams and gain college admissions.
