On 27 August 2022, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Karnataka arrested Rachana Hanamant, a 24-year-old engineering graduate from Basavana Bagewadi, who is the first rank holder in women’s category in the Police Sub Inspector (PSI) recruitment exam. She has been arrested on the charges of securing the first rank illegally.
Rachana, the first women rank holder in the exam, has been missing for the last 3 months. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) team has finally caught her near Hirolli check post at the Karnataka-Maharashtra border. She has been taken to Bengaluru, as the case against her has been registered in the High Grounds Police Station.
PSI Recruitment Scam – Details
- As per the Crime Investigation Department (CID) team, Rachana allegedly tampered with her answers in the Optical Marks Recognition (OMR) sheets to secure a score of 153.25 marks.
- In the descriptive writing part, she managed to get 25 marks out of 50 and secured 128.25 out of 150 in the objective questions section.
- In its 1,900-page charge sheet, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) stated that the question paper was leaked by the staff and the headmaster of the Jnana Jyothi English Medium School in Kalaburgi town and they ticked the answer sheets on behalf of the students after the exam.
- The police has also arrested the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Amrit Paul, BJP leader & Jnana Jyothi English Medium School Head Divya Hagaragi, Congress Block President Mahanthesh D Patil, his brother Rudragouda Patil, Afzalpur Congress MLA’s gunman Hayyali Desai, Assistant Engineer Manjunath Melakundi, and many toppers for their alleged involvement in the PSI recruitment scam.

- The examination for 545 posts of police sub-inspector was held on October 3, 2021, and around 54,041 students appeared for it.
- The result was declared in January 2022 but was declared invalid after an investigation by the Crime Investigation Department (CID).
PSI Recruitment Scam – Past Case
- In 2021, the Crime Investigation Department (CID) also arrested the exam topper Kushal Kumar J. for tampering with his Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet.
- Kumar reportedly obtained 137.25 marks out of his total score of 167.75 from the objective part of the questionnaire, which he was accused to have tampered with, and 30.5 marks from the written part.
- He secured the first rank at the exam, which was set for a total of 200 marks.
- During that time in 2021, the arrest count crossed 50 in number. Moreover, CID arrested as many as seven candidates for tampering with their Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheets after registering five new FIRs in Bengaluru.
- The OMR sheets of such candidates showed differences from its carbon copy after being inspected by the forensic department team.
