NIFT Entrance Exam Eligibility – Programmes available
NIFT is a pioneer in India for fashion education. The entrance exam is conducted for admissions in 16 associated NIFT institutes for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses . The UG programmes include B.Des. (Fashion Design), B.Des. (Leather Design), B.Des. (Accessory Design), B.Des. (Textile Design), B.Des. (Knitwear Design), B.Des. (Fashion Communication), and B.FTech. (Apparel Production). The PG programmes include M.Des. (Master of Design), M.F.M. (Master of Fashion Management), and M.FTech. (Master of Fashion Technology). NIFT also offers full-time and part-time Doctoral Programmes.
NIFT Entrance Exam – Academic and Age Eligibility
The official governing body of the NIFT entrance exam has set the basic academic eligibility requirements for the aspiring candidates. Given below are the basic eligibility standards which are mandatory for the candidates to satisfy for various courses.
Bachelor of Design (Fashion Design/ Leather Design/Accessory Design/Textile Design/Knitwear Design /Fashion Communication)
Eligibility Criteria:
- Aspiring candidates must have passed the 10 + 2 exam from a recognized board of secondary education (State/Central) with minimum 50% marks.
- Those candidates who have completed the 10 + 2 exam from any local/overseas board or university validated by the Association of Indian Universities are also eligible to apply for the NIFT entrance exam.
- Candidates who have passed their 10 + 2 exam from the National Open School are also eligible to apply for the NIFT entrance exam, provided that the candidate has passed with 5 main subjects.
- Candidates who have completed a 3-4 year diploma validated by the AICTE or State Board of Technical Education are also eligible to apply for the exam.
- Candidates who have completed the General Certificate Education (GCE) conducted in countries like Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom at an advanced level are also eligible to apply for the exam.
Bachelors in Fashion Technology (Apparel Production) (B.FTech.)
Eligibility Criteria:
- Aspiring candidates must have passed the 10 + 2 exam with Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics as main subjects from a recognized board of secondary education (State/Central) with minimum 50% marks.
- Those candidates who have completed the 10 + 2 exam with Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics as main subjects from any local/overseas board or university validated by the Association of Indian Universities are also eligible to apply for the NIFT entrance exam.
- Candidates who have passed their 10 + 2 exam from the National Open School are also eligible to apply for the NIFT entrance exam, provided that the candidate has passed with 5 main subjects including Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
- Candidates who have completed a 3-4 year diploma validated by the AICTE or State Board of Technical Education are eligible to apply for the exam.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates must have completed a 4 year undergraduate program from NIFT or any other institution recognized by the law in India.
- Candidates who have completed a 3 year Diploma in Fashion from National Institute of Fashion Technology or National Institute of Design are eligible.
Age Limit – No age limit is set for the postgraduate courses.
Masters in Fashion Technology
Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates must have completed a 4 year undergraduate program from National Institute of Fashion technology.
- Candidates who have completed a Bachelor in Engineering or Bachelor of Technology from any recognized university by law of India are also eligible.
Age Limit – No age limit is set for the postgraduate courses.
NIFT Entrance Exam Eligibility – Eligibility for Reservation
Candidates applying for the entrance exam under reserved categories must possess essential certificates and submit them when the authorities inform them to. Inability to do so may lead to the rejection of candidature.
Schedule Caste/Scheduled Tribe – Aspiring candidates belonging to these categories must possess a Caste or Tribe Certificate authenticated by the competent authorities of the concerned States/Union Territories/ National Commision of Tribes.
Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer) – Aspiring candidates belonging to this category must have an authentic certificate validated by the competent authority. It is also mandatory for the candidates to carry the certificate, which is no less than a year old. The OBC certificate should be issued in the name of the candidate as certificate of any other member in the family won’t be considered eligible.
Differently-abled Candidates – Candidates belonging to this category must attach a copy of disability certificate at the time of application of the NIFT entrance exam. It is also mandatory for such candidates to carry a medical certificate at the time of admissions and counselling. Differently-abled candidates may also be granted external assistance after evaluating the physical conditions at the time of counselling.
NIFT Entrance Exam Eligibility – FAQ’s
Q. Is there any relaxation for the OBC candidates?
Relaxation is provided to the candidates according to the type of their respective certificates. Those candidates who possess a creamy layer certificate won’t be considered eligible for relaxation in various aspects whereas candidates who possess a non-creamy layer certificate will be considered eligible for reservation. Thus, relaxation is only given to the OBC candidates who possess a non-creamy layer certificate.
Q. Is the passing certificate from National Open School accepted for the NIFT entrance exam?
Yes, passing certificate from the National Open School is accepted for the NIFT entrance exam. Candidates must have passed the 10 + 2 exam with any 5 main subjects (to be eligible for the Bachelors in Design courses). Those applying for the Bachelors in Fashion Technology course should have mathematics, physics and chemistry as a part of their 10+2 main subjects.
Q. How much age relaxation is given to the SC/ST candidates?
For candidates belonging to the SC/ST categories, a 5-year age relaxation is given. SC/ST candidates may apply for the NIFT entrance exam at the maximum age of 28 years (as on 1st October of the year of application).
