New Delhi, 5th May 2022: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) has taken a remarkable step to make its high-quality computer science courses available to everyone. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of IIT-M has launchedย an online portal that contains several courses on programming, data structures, computer organisation, and algorithms, which can be accessed for free by students all over the country.
Computer Science is one of the most sought-after engineering disciplines in India, particularly at the IITs, and is popular among students. Despite the fact that a huge number of students apply for this stream at IITs, there are only a few seats available in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. This is why the institute has launched the free portal for computer science courses, where students can enroll without sitting for the JEE exam.ย
As the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is not a requirement for admission into these courses, IIT-M aims to benefit students from rural areas and from low-income families by offering all students complete and free access to numerous courses.ย
Speaking about the initiative, Prof. C. Chandra Sekhar, Head of Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), IIT Madras, said, โThe recordings of live lectures for CSE core courses at the undergraduate level and the graduate level, by the faculty of the Department are expected to be helpful to the students in engineering colleges to learn the underlying concepts and principles of the subjects of these courses in the right manner.โ

It is estimated that the IITs have an acceptance rate of less than 2%, implying that only a small percentage of candidates make the cut through the JEE exam. Only pupils who reach the academia’s halls have access to relevant content. However, there are numerous brilliant individuals from local institutions whose skill must be nurtured because they lack access to superior education. If these pupils do not have access to good material and do not improve their academic abilities, their professional lives and future are jeopardized. Does a student need to appear for the JEE exam to take admission in the online computer science courses?
No, the student does not have to appear for the JEE exam. Any student from any university or stream interested in learning about computer science can take up the course.
Will those enrolled in this program have access to IIT Madras campus facilities?
Due to limitations of campus facilities and students being spread out geographically, learners enrolled in the program will not have access to IIT-M campus facilities.
What is the language of instruction for these courses? Are they available in other regional languages?
All the program courses are taught in English. Hence, the institute expects a minimum proficiency in English language to participate in the program.
I do not have any knowledge of coding. Does this course cover the basics of coding before progressing to advanced levels?
It is not necessary to have a prior knowledge of coding to learn from the courses. The programs are structured in such a way that once a learner starts from the Foundational level and progresses towards the Degree level in sequence, h /she will obtain sufficient proficiency in programming and data science.
